Maxol Direct Delivers the goods for schools' football
22 October 2008
Schools’ football received a boost this week with the announcement that Maxol Direct, the Province’s leading fuel company, has renewed the sponsorship of the Belfast Senior Cup for a further year.
The Mallusk based firm is pumping a four figure sum into the promotion of the competition with special incentives for the successful teams in the later rounds and a “Man of the Match” award for the St Patrick’s Day final.
At the sponsorship presentation Paul Hackett, Managing Director of Maxol Direct, stated “Maxol Direct is delighted to continue the sponsorship of the Senior Cup. This is the eighteenth year in which we have sponsored the event. That is the longest period of support by a commercial company for youth sport and we are pleased that Maxol Direct has played an important part in the development of schools’ football in the Greater Belfast area”.

Thanking Maxol Direct for their renewed support, Belfast Chairman Paul Kerr replied “I pay tribute to Maxol Direct for the commitment they have shown to schools’ football over a prolonged period and their continued backing is greatly appreciated”.
Over the 18 years Model and De La Salle have dominated the competition. Only once has the traditional St. Patrick’s Day final not had a team from either of these schools participating. Model lifted the trophy last year and they begin the defence of their title this week against Fort Hill. The Lisburn school will push the champions all the way but with home advantage Model should progress to the last sixteen.
De La Salle are also involved in the opening round. They entertain Ashfield and will need to be on top form to see off the talented east Belfast side.
Three years ago St. Mary’s lifted the Maxol Direct trophy at the first attempt. They repeated the feat the following season by winning the Northern Ireland Senior Cup and then retained that trophy. They will fancy their chances of collecting silverware again. East Antrim champions Monkstown will provide stiff opposition but St. Mary’s should just have the edge on the visitors.
The meeting of Lisnagarvey and St. Patrick’s will generate plenty of interest in Lisburn. Lisnagarvey will hope that home advantage will tip the scales in their favour but it will be no surprise if a replay is needed to separate the sides.
